Position Summary

The Center is seeking a Part-Time Assistant Data Analyst and Dashboard Developer to support the translation of ourresearch into practice — through both rigorous quantitative analysis and interactive tools that make findings complex accessible to practitioners, policymakers, and community partners. This position builds and maintains R Shiny dashboards, prepares and validates datasets, conducts descriptive and inferential analyses, and responds to data requests from the research team. The role works with survey data, national surveillance datasets, and other complex sources, and followsrigorous data management and reproducibility standards. This is a strong fit for someone who is equally comfortablewriting analysis code and building tools that other people rely on.

Specific duties include:

Dashboard Development

  • Build interactive dashboards in R Shiny to make research findings usable by staff, partners, and funders.
  • Maintain, update, and extend the Center’s existing dashboards as underlying data, measures, and requirements change.
  • Translate requests from researchers and program staff into dashboard specifications, including which metrics tosurface, how users will filter them, and what the dashboard should not attempt to show.
  • Write modular, well-organized Shiny code that another analyst can maintain, and manage reactivity so dashboards remain responsive as datasets grow.
  • Deploy dashboards and manage versions, access permissions, and user roles in line with data securityrequirements for sensitive and restricted-access data.
  • Test dashboards before release and troubleshoot issues reported by users after release.
  • Design for non-technical audiences, choosing clear defaults and presenting uncertainty honestly rather than displaying every available number.
  • Document dashboard structure, data sources, and update procedures so the Center is not dependent on any one person to keep a dashboard running.

Data Visualization and Dissemination

  • Produce publication-quality tables, figures, and summary statistics for manuscripts, reports, and presentations.
  • Develop clear, accurate static visualizations that communicate findings to scientific and lay audiences.
  • Support internal teams in translating research findings into practice and policy applications.

Data Preparation and Management

  • Clean, screen, and validate datasets while ensuring compliance with data security and protectionrequirements.
  • Identify and resolve data quality issues, including fraudulent responses, missing values, outliers, and codinginconsistencies.
  • Prepare and document analysis-ready datasets, maintaining well-organized, clearly labeled files that support reproducible workflows.
  • Adopt gold-standard data management practices, including version control, secure data storage, and comprehensive documentation of analytic procedures and decision points.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of codebooks and analysis pipelines to ensure transparency andreproducibility.

Quantitative Analysis

  • Conduct descriptive and preliminary statistical analyses on projects aligned with the Center’s mission.
  • Support the development and implementation of analysis plans in collaboration with senior staff.
  • Conduct sensitivity checks and basic model diagnostics to support the validity of findings.
  • Respond to internal data requests from research team members in a timely and accurate manner, and flag notable patterns or data anomalies for team review.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in statistics, epidemiology, public health, social work, psychology, data science, or a related field, or equivalent applied experience.
  • Proficiency in data management and statistical analysis using R (required).
  • Demonstrated experience building dashboards in R Shiny (required). Please include a link to a dashboardyou have built, or a description of one you cannot share publicly.
  • Demonstrated experience cleaning, managing, and preparing datasets for analysis.
  • Experience conducting descriptive and inferential statistical analyses.
  • Familiarity with reproducible research practices, including code documentation and version control.
  • Authorization to work in the United States. The Center is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this position.

Ideal Candidates Will Have

  • Experience deploying and maintaining Shiny applications (e.g., Posit Connect, shinyapps.io, or containerized deployment).
  • Familiarity with Shiny modules, reactivity management, and techniques for keeping dashboards performant on larger datasets.

  • Applicants at all educational levels are welcome to apply. Please note that this is an execution-focused, assistant-level role without independent research or publication responsibilities; candidates seeking those opportunities areunlikely to find it a strong fit.
  • An eye for visual design and the judgment to keep a dashboard focused on what users actually need.
  • Experience working with national surveillance, surveys, or restricted-access administrative datasets (e.g., NVDRS, NCANDS, vital records).
  • Experience building tools for audiences without a statistical background.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple requests and deadlines while working independently in a remote environment.
  • Comfort working both independently and collaboratively as part of a distributed team.

What You Can Expect from The Center
